I hesitated to write about this book just yet because I’m not completely finished reading it. However, I keep talking about it with all the actors I know and I just can’t wait to share it with everyone here.
Larry Moss is one of the most sought after acting coaches in the world and from what I’ve heard from mutual friends (I can’t even believe I can say that), he is also one of the most generous and kind souls out there. In fact, he shares a lot of personal stories and feelings in this book and it is pretty evident that he’s a special person.
I had read pieces of this book when I was in theatre school but for some reason never the whole thing. It turns out it was for the best. I don’t think I was ready for it back then. This book has landed in my lap at the perfect time. At a moment in time when I needed motivation and inspiration and that extra little bit of something to remind me of why I love acting and this business in the first place. It helps that in the last couple of months I’ve also worked with some teachers who have been incredibly supportive and encouraging and let me know that I was heading in the right direction. It’s funny how life works.
The first time I saw the Marcel The Shell video I watched it 10 times in a row. I don’t know how but I fell in love with a shell named Marcel. We all fell in love with him.
He is the creation of Jenny Slate (voice), and Dean Fleischer -Camp. The two creative individuals have now turned the adorable shell into a children’s book that can actually be enjoyed by all ages! I could not have been more excited when I saw the book at my local bookstore today!
Check out the original short film below, and check out the website for the book which can be found here. You can also hear the book being read aloud by Marcel himself.
This is the perfect gift for any child or anyone with a creative spirit. It’s always so inspiring when artists create beautiful, thoughtful and positive work. Brava!
As a true Sondheim Junkie I am embarrassed that I only very recently bought this book. However, in my defence I was living out of two suitcases and a truck for the last 6 months and I didn’t think carrying a hard cover book was a practical idea. Regardless, I now feel complete knowing that this book is safely in my arms. I have not been able to put it down.
I have one bold statement to make about Sondheim….and here it is: The music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim can change the world. I swear. If only everybody took the time to really listen and absorb the incredible messages, themes and ideas in his shows….the world would be a better place. On a daily basis something will happen to me, or I will witness something happening and I will think about a sondheim lyric. I swear I am the person I am because of the moral lessons I’ve learned from his shows throughout my life. Am I crazy? Maybe. But I dare you to ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I’m a pretty decent person!
So, do the world a favour and take a listen to Sunday In The Park With George or Into The Woods. These are two of my favorites. Or better yet…buy the DVDs of the staged Broadway productions. Also, if you want to learn more about the genius that is Sondheim and read some early drafts of his lyrics….you must buy this book!
